My name is Sherry. I am a Special Education Teacher in Richland School District Two. My class consists of children with mental disabilities, autism and Down syndrome. I plan on having the facility dog to help in many areas of the school including other classrooms, speech, PT and OT.
A facility dog will also help my students make friends, increase positive self-esteem and promote inclusion. The dog’s presence has a calming effect on the children and staff members. Already, we have seen introverted children increase speech by talking to the dog and emerging readers improve confidence by reading aloud to the dog.
